Cateogory: Water Gardening -> Fun Stuff!
Name: Low cost biological filter instructions
Description: Biological filter--supplies: thick poly batting found at sewing centers, enough bath/sponge balls or pot scrubbers to fill 3/4 of bucket, 3/4" pvc about 7" long, 3/4" pvc coupler with threads, 3/4" Female hose to female hose swivel (this is the size of my Becket filter thread), a very clean bucket with either screw on lid (WHITE) or snap on lid (YELLOW CAT LITTER BUCKET) with LOTS of holes drilled in it, and bricks or rock for weight. The hole cut in the side of the bucket is 1". Please view pictures for assembly. The pump I am using for this has a capacity of 210 gph. Needs to be cleaned monthly for best performance. Either spray out the batting or replace. Scrubbers need to be swished in pond water, not fresh to prevent killing bacteria. The pvc coupling costs about 50 cents, the sponges 3/$1 at discounters, yellow bucket from cat litter/white bucket is from pool chemicals, and the swivel coupler is about $3 at Lowe's hardware, and batting $7 per yard.
